The Study of Materia Medica, part 4
Before jumping in to Hering’s essay on the topic, I’d like to introduce some concepts.
In 1858, Clemens Maria Franz, baron von Boenninghausen, published his essay A Contribution to the Judgement Concerning The Characteristic Value of Symptoms, tending to describe “the greater or lesser (characteristic) value of the symptoms occurring in a disease, to aid as a norm or basis in the therapeutical selection of the remedy.”
His inspiration was a hexameter developed by theologic scholastics to assess the peculiarity and grievousness of a moral disease:
Quis? quid? ubi? quibus auxiliis? cur? quomodo? quando?
(Who? What? Where? Along with? Why? In what manner? When?)
