Since the introduction of the Rotavirus vaccines in 1998, 2006, & 2008, the incidence of Rotavirus and of viral gastroenteritis in general has plummeted in the economically privileged world, leaving other viral pathogens as the principal causes of the remaining cases of childhood gastroenteritis. These other viruses have not increased in absolute incidence, but make up a proportionately larger share of the lower overall incidence (reduced by ~60% in the U.S) of viral gastroenteritis. The most important of these are the Noroviruses.

In some populations, here in children under the age of 6 in Tennessee with acute gastroenteritis in 2016, 10 years after the introduction of the Rotavirus vaccine, Noroviruses actually are of greater significance than Rotavirus.
